Top 5 tools every gardener needs
Gardening is a rewarding activity that can provide you with fresh produce, beautiful flowers, and a sense of accomplishment. To make the most of your gardening experience, it’s important to have the right tools. Here are the top five tools that every gardener needs and what I mainly use in my garden:
1. Hand Hoe
A hand-held hoe is lightweight and compact, making it easy to use with one hand and store in small spaces. This tool is great for weeding, loosening the soil, digging for planting bulbs and cutting through the roots of unwanted plants. This is my most used tool in my garden as it’s so versatile! I highly recommend getting this as it can replace many other tools and save you time and effort as you can do multiple tasks with it.
2. Pruning Shears
Pruning shears are a type of scissors for use on plants. They are strong enough to prune hard branches of trees and shrubs, sometimes up to two centimetres thick. Once your plants and trees start growing, pruning is one of the most essential techniques for ensuring your plant continues to grow healthy.
3. Garden Rake
A garden rake is used to gather leaves, hay, grass, etc., and, in gardening, for loosening the soil, light weeding and levelling and removing dead grass from lawns. This tool is essential during the Autumn season when your garden gets covered with leaves. It makes my job so much easier!
4. Garden Hose with Adjustable Nozzle
Watering is essential for any garden, and a garden hose with an adjustable nozzle allows you to provide just the right amount of moisture. You can adjust the pressure for delicate plants and increase it for more hardy plants.
5. Wheelbarrow
A wheelbarrow is designed to distribute the weight of its load between the wheel and the operator enabling the convenient carriage of heavier and bulkier loads. I often use this to move garden debris, small plants or mulch. Not only will your body thank you but you’ll save lots of time!
Remember, quality tools that feel comfortable in your hand will make your gardening tasks more enjoyable and easier on your body. Happy gardening!
